Health Risk Assessment Research

  1.  Environmental Toxicology: The HRA Unit conducts in-depth and comprehensive risk assessments to evaluate the potential risks posed by a wide range of chemicals, including heavy metals, microplastics, and emerging pollutants, on both human populations and ecosystems. Additionally, our work includes studying the cumulative risks posed by multiple pollutants in the environment, identifying vulnerable populations, and developing strategies for mitigating the negative impacts of these contaminants on both public health and the environment.
  2.  Environmental Microbiology: Our research in environmental microbiology focuses on the transmission dynamics of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), communicable diseases, and zoonotic diseases through a One Health approach. This integrated approach recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health and aims to identify the pathways through which pathogens, including resistant strains, are transmitted across these domains. A key component of our research is the detection and monitoring of environmental pathogens in various settings, such as rivers, wastewater, and other environmental matrices, where contaminants may pose a risk to human and animal health.

Collaborative Engagements:

At the HRA Unit, collaboration is key to our mission of safeguarding human health. We work closely with a diverse range of stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health at all levels, other ministries and government agencies, academic institutions, and the private sector. These partnerships enable us to align research with national health priorities, address cross-cutting health issues, engage in interdisciplinary research, and develop innovative solutions for exposure assessments and health risk management.

Consultation Services

The HRA Unit provides consultation services that leverage expertise in health risk assessment to enhance the effectiveness of health interventions and disease prevention strategies, ultimately helping stakeholders improve population health and well-being.

Training and Education

We are dedicated to knowledge dissemination and capacity building in the field of health risk assessment. Through workshops, seminars, and training sessions, we empower professionals, employers, and workers with the tools and knowledge needed to protect human health from the impacts of contaminants.
