The Climate Change (CC) Unit was officially established in 2019 within the EHRC as a proactive response to the growing recognition of the urgent intersection between climate change and health issues. As climate change continues to affect various aspects of human and environmental health, it became increasingly clear that there was a pressing need for focused attention and research in this area. This need prompted both the Ministry of Health and the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) to prioritize the integration of climate-related health concerns into national health policy and public health strategies. While EHRC had long been involved in addressing climate-related health risks, such as those linked to air pollution, extreme weather events, and infectious disease outbreaks, the rising severity and complexity of climate change impacts underscored the importance of developing a dedicated unit to tackle these challenges head-on.
